We had an early 'wake up' call this morning from Captain Lye, to tell us that as the weather was not good enough to tender into Nanortalik, we would be missing this port and instead steaming ahead to Qaqortoq, in the hope that the weather was better there.
Greenland is the largest island in the world and about 85% of it is covered with an ice-cap which is 2 miles thick in places. It's reported that there is enough water in this frozen mass to raise the world's oceans by almost 20 feet, which would result in many coastal communities in the world being swamped. Nuuk is the capital and their currency is Danish Kroner. Greenlandic and Danish are taught to the little children and later on at school, they are taught English.
As luck would have it, it turned out to be the most perfect day, beautiful blue skies and a very short tender ashore. The view of this port as we got closer was stunning – humble little homes of every colour of the rainbow, and every other colour in between. We walked around the little town and up and down a few of the narrow streets, not many locals about (perhaps they're on holiday too) and we were simply amazed that people would consider living in this extremely remote part of the world, but they do!! They did have a nice pub, on the hill in prime location overlooking the harbour, but the queue of Princess passengers was so long, it wasn't worth waiting to be served.
Unfortunately many of the locals were caught out today as they didn't expect our ship in until tomorrow, which was very disappointing for them - the other pub was closed as their beer order wasn't due to arrive until later in the day.
However, it was a new experience for us and yet another wonderful and very interesting day :)
